Bacteriological profile of purulent otitis media at the Avicenna Military Hospital in Marrakech

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a perforated tympanic membrane with persistent drainage from the middle ear. It an avoidable cause of hearing loss, especially in developing countries. We conducted prospective study over 8 years (1 January 2014 - 1 2022), Including 250 patients consulting Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Department Avicenna Military Hospital Marrakesh, collaboration Laboratory Microbiology. included all non-redundant bacterial species isolated pus purulent chronic ear infections sent to microbiology laboratory. The cytobacteriological analysis was carried out according conventional techniques and / or automated method BD PhoenixTM. antibiotic sensitivity using diffusion agar medium recommendations CA-SFM. There were 147 men 103 women sex ratio 1.4. mean age 34 (8 82 years). second fourth decades represent most affected groups. bacteriological profile dominated by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (40%), followed Staphylococcus aureus (32%) Proteus mirabilis (13%). These different isolates represented low resistance levels but remained sensitive fluoroquinolones. Five strains enterobacteria produced derepressed cephalosporinase, nine Enterobacteria carrying extended spectrum Beta lactamase enzymes. No strain resistant ceftazidime isolated. Gram positive cocci accounted for 38% strains. In view profiles found otitis, antibiotics based on fluoroquinolones are recommended.
